How to use magic in Expedition: Into Darkness
Community sources agree on the basic flow: equip a spellcasting conduit, configure compatible Numens or alignments, then enter spell symbols with the arrow keys. Your available Incantation Slots limit how many inputs remain stable. Exact recipes and results are version-sensitive, so this page explains the setup without promising that an old combination still produces the same spell. We have not gameplay-tested this flow.
What do I need before casting?
The community wiki describes a conduit as required equipment for spellcasting and says its Numen slots determine which magical alignments are available. Steam players separately report inserting scholar gems into a staff and seeing affinity-related behavior. These sources support checking the conduit and its configured slots first; they do not establish that every staff, gem or Numen works identically in the current Demo.
Which keys enter a spell?
The community wiki and the Steam discussion both identify the arrow keys as the spell-symbol inputs. The wiki separates these inputs from normal WASD movement. Players also report that input order matters. We have not reproduced the controls, so follow the current in-game prompts if they differ.
Why can the same attempt become unstable?
The community wiki says Incantation Slots determine how many symbols can be entered reliably, and that symbols beyond the available slots enter an unstable area. A Steam participant describes the same distinction between stable slots and additional shifting symbols. Early replies in that thread reported inconsistent results before a small update, which is why this page does not present one recipe list as permanently correct.
What is Corruption?
Both the community wiki and a Steam player describe Corruption building while spells are cast. The wiki identifies it as a purple bar that falls over time. We have not verified the current thresholds, penalties or safe rotation, so this is a warning to watch the in-game meter—not a tested build recommendation.
What this page deliberately does not claim
- It does not claim that every old spell combination still works in the current Demo.
- It does not rank staffs, Numens, gems, schools or skill-tree choices.
- It does not publish damage numbers, Corruption thresholds or a best magic build without current independent verification.
- It does not treat a community wiki or player report as an official developer instruction.
Sources & limits
- Community wiki: Spellcasting
A community-maintained description of conduits, Numens, arrow-key inputs, Incantation Slots and Corruption. It is not a developer guide and may change with the Demo. Reviewed 22 September 2026.
- Steam players: How does magic work? (Demo)
A dated Demo discussion in which players report arrow-key casting, staff gems or affinities, unstable inputs beyond unlocked slots and conflicting early-build behavior. This is not an official or current-build guarantee.
- Reddit players: Magic combinations found in the Demo
A separate player post and replies reporting spell inputs. It supports the basic control model, but exact recipes remain version-sensitive and are not reproduced here as guaranteed current combinations.
